Effects of Coenzyme Q10 Supplementation on Growth Performance, some Hematological Parameters, Plasma Enzymes Activities in Broilers with Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome (PHS)
author
Abstract:
This study investigated the effects of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation on hematological, enzymes activities and biochemical parameters in broilers with pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS).Two hundred and forty 1-d-old Ross 308 male broiler chicks were randomly allocated into 3 groups with 4 replicates. From d 14, the diets were supplemented with CoQ10 at levels of 0, 20 and 40 mg/kg, respectively, while exposing them to low ambient temperature (10 to 15 ˚C) to induce PHSuntil d 42.Mortality was inspected to determine cause of death and diagnose of PHS. Hematological, biochemical and pathological tests were used to determine the incidence of PHS: total red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (HGB), hematocrit (HCT), plasma protein and glucose, activity of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH).Blood samples were taken at d 21 and 42. At the end of the experiment (wk 6), 2 chicks from each replicate were randomly selected and slaughtered. The heart was removed; the right ventricle was dissected away from the left ventricle and septum and the ratio of right ventricle weight to total ventricle weight (RV/TV) was calculated.Average BW gain and average feed intake were measured weekly from d 15 and average feed conversion ratio was calculated and reported weekly. The results showed that 40 mg/kg CoQ10 supplementationimprovedfeed conversion ratio(FCR)(P

full textEffects of Glutamine Supplementation on Growth Performance and Antioxidant Status in Broilers with Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome (PHS)
The present study examined the antioxidant defense of glutamine on plasma and liver antioxidant status in broilers under PHS with respect to changes in the levels of lipid peroxidation marker malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant status (TAS) and the activities of anti peroxidative enzymes [superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione dependent antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase (GPX)]...

full textAntioxidant enzyme activities and mitochondrial fatty acids in pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS) in broilers.
Major objectives of this study were to assess antioxidant protection and fatty acid profile in lung mitochondria and whole liver in broilers with pulmonary hypertension syndrome [(PHS; with and without high dietary vitamin E (VE)] (Experiment 1) and in broilers that did not develop PHS but were genetically selected (S) or not selected (NS) for resistance to PHS (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, ...
full textImmunohistochemical evidence of cytochrome C oxidase subunit II involvement in pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS) in broilers.
Defects and variation in the relative amount of protein subunits in the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) have been hypothesized to be involved, in part, in the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS), a costly metabolic disease. Thus, the major objective of this study was to determine whether differences in relative amounts of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and II (COX...
full textCoenzyme Q supplementation in pulmonary arterial hypertension
Mitochondrial dysfunction is a fundamental abnormality in the vascular endothelium and smooth muscle of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Because coenzyme Q (CoQ) is essential for mitochondrial function and efficient oxygen utilization as the electron carrier in the inner mitochondrial membrane, we hypothesized that CoQ would improve mitochondrial function and benefit PAH pat...
